ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A shielding cylinder used in an electrical machine (such as a turbogenerator) having a superconductive excitation winding is manufactured to have very precise circular and cylindrical dimensions. A heated inner cylinder is placed onto a mandrel, and is then cooled and machined. A heated outer cylinder is thereupon pushed onto the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder is then cooled and machined. A two piece mandrel may be used to facilitate the manufacture of long shielding cylinders. Axial ducts and annular ducts are arranged between the inner and outer cylinders to provide flow paths for a cooling fluid. The outer cylinder can be reinforced by one or more peripheral bulges with the bulges forming additional ducts.
