ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Smoke retardant vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride polymer compositions are obtained by including therein a synergistic mixture of (A) at least one nickel compound selected from the group consisting of NiI2, NiMoO4, NiO and nickel dimethylglyoxime and (B) at least one aluminum compound selected from the group consisting of Al2(MoO4)3, .alpha.-Al2O3, Al2(WO4)3, ammonium-6-molybdo- aluminate (III), nnd alumlnum sal.tcylate. Substant.lal smoke retardation is also obtained by including the above nickel compounds or aluminum compounds individually or alumin- um ammonium sulfate, aluminum potassium sulfate, or aluminum acetylacetorate in the vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride polymer compositions.
