ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION "A DATA TRANSMISSION EXCHANGE " A central control unit (ZE) via a processor (VE-Z) controls access to a bus line (BUS) for processors (VE-K and VE-S) of a communications unit (KE) and a storage unit (SE). This selective access enables convenient transmission of data signals between data terminals (T1,...Tn) either directly or via storage positions of the storage unit (SE) whose addresses are supplied by the central control unit (ZE) possibly after being recalled from the storage unit (SE) which can store the addresses if not required immediately. The central control unit (ZE) includes a programme selector (BMC) which selects control programmes in dependence on the parts of the communications unit (KE) and storage unit (SE) being used and on the instructions to be carried out.
