ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed for straightening suspension bars removed from cathode plates in electrolytic refining plants, in which the suspension bars removed from the cathode plates are trans- ferred to a straightening station provided with a straightening apparatus, then the suspension bars are straightened by pressing, by means of the straightening apparatus, each suspension bar to be straightened, in stages and substantially simultaneously in both the vertical and the lateral direction, and finally the straightened suspension bar is laterally transferred by the straightening apparatus, and a suspension-bar bundle is formed from the straightened suspension bars on a chain conveyor, or in a crate or a cassette. The straightening apparatus disclosed comprises: a frame, a vertical press device, which is adapted to press the suspension bar in vertical direction, and a horizontal press device, which is adapted to press the suspension bar laterally, means for operating the vertical press device, and means for operating the horizontal press device, and a removing device for trans- ferring the straightened suspension bar in the lateral direction.
