ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A selective process for the preparation of substantial- ly pure 8-chloro-3-(.beta.-diethylaminoethyl)-4-methyl-7- ethoxycar- bonylmethoxy coumarin which comprises reacting 2-chlorore- sorcine with .alpha.-acetyl- .gamma.-butyrolactone in the presence of hydrobromic acid and acetic acid, reacting the resulting product with ethyl monochloroacetate in the presence of K2CO3 and KI, and reacting the recrystallized product with diethylamine in the presence of anhydrous K2CO3 to obtain the desired final product.
