Case 77050 METHOD OF SIZING PAPER AT THE SIZE PRESS AND RESULTING WATER-RESISTANT PAPER ABSTRACT A method of sizing paper at the size press of a Fourdrinier- type papermaking machine, and the resulting water-resistant paper. A starch which has been reacted with octenyl succinic anhydride is applied to a formed paper web from the size press. The starch com- bines with a multivalent metal ion (aluminum) already present in the paper web to become hydrophobic, and thereby impart a high level of water resistance concentrated at the surface of the paper. The sub- ject method attains water resistance in the finished paper which is equivalent to internally sized papers using combinations of alum and rosin applied at the wet-end of the papermaking process. Economies in the use of the starch derivative are realized by means of the sur- face sizing method disclosed because the starch derivative is concen- trated at the surfaces of the paper.
