ABSTRACT A novel coupling means for coupling elongated drill rod sections together and a novel method for assembly and disassembly of such sections is disclosed. The coupling means utilizes a body which can receive and secure a drill rod section in each end and external portions engageable by a tool. The external portions include enlongated flats extending from each end so that as the body rotates a tool engaging the flats can move axially relative to the body. In the method all coupling means are initially loosened and then the drill motor tightens the coupling means connected to the uppermost drill rod section. The motor is then operated to release the uppermost drill rod section from the next lower drill rod section. The uppermost drill rod section is moved to a rack, is disconnected from the motor and deposited in the rack. The motor is then connected to next uppermost drill rod section and the process is repeated until the drill string is completely disassembled. The method is performed in the opposite sence when assembling the drill string.
