ABSTRACT An improved annotatable microfiche film card archival recording system utilizes an intermediate film strip (71) on a movable film head (2) to transfer an image from an initial imaging station (10) to a transfer station (14) where the image on the intermediate film strip (71) is transferred to the microfiche film card (20). There is provided an optical train including a pair of downwardly facing, inclined and horizontally spaced mirrors (36) (38) at the imaging station (10), the first of which mirror (36) receives upwardly directed light reflected from hard copy. This mirror ar- rangement, cooperating with a horizontal film head movement in a direction transverse to the mirror spacing, minimizes the height and width require- ments of the equipment. A ball joint supported backing means (50) supporting the entire area of the active portion of the film improves image resolution. Controlled upward displacement of only the image-receiving portion of the inter- mediate film strip (71) during image transfer allows full utilization of the peripheral areas of the microfiche film card (20) when supported on a flange support frame (16). Controlled downward displacement of the intermediate film strip (71) at the imaging station (10) allows an intermediate film backing element (26) and a microfiche film card image projection illuminator (11) to be acti- vated by a common lifting means (24). A selec- tively interposable corrector lens (172) optimizes image resolution of this projection.
