ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hinge assembly for the hood of a vehicle engine compartment which applies a spring force to counterbalance the weight of the hood so that the hood moves to an initial open position without the assistance of manual effort and can be moved from the initially open posiiton through an arc greater than 90 degrees with a substantially constant manual force.
