A B S T R A C T This invention relates to a method and to an arrangement for the transmission of characters. In the transmission of characters stored in a character generator of a transmitting station and differing from characters stored in a character generator of a receiving station, code words instead of data words are transmitted which call the characters in the character generators. The code words are passed to a printing head, formed by a plurality of printing elements, by bypassing the character generator of the receiving station. The code words are produced with the aid of a converter from binary character sequences which are emitted at the output of the char- acter generator in the transmitting station when the corresponding characters are called.
