ABSTRACT: Novel 7.alpha.-alkoxycephem or 6.alpha.-alkoxypenam compounds having tbe group R1-S-NH- (in which R1 represents a trihalomethyl group or an optionally substituted aromatic hydrocarbyl group) at the 7.beta.- position or 6.beta.- position, respectively, may be prepared by reacting the corresponding 7.beta.-sulphenylimino cephem compound or 6.beta.-sulphenylimino penam compound which is unsubstituted at the 7.alpha.- or 6.alpha.- position witb an alkanol. The compounds of the invention may be converted by reaction with an and halide to the corresponding 7.beta.-acylamino-7.alpha.-alkoxycephem or 6.beta.-acylamino-6.alpha.- alkoxypenam compounds, which have excellent anti- bacterial activity, or by reaction with a nucleophile to the corresponding 7.beta.-amino or 6.beta.-amino compounds, which are useful intermediates in the production of cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics.
