ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the relative phase shift and attenuation of microwave electromagnetic energy traversing an earth formation of interest are detected at two different frequencies. The phase shift and attenuation at each frequency are combined to provide a function of the dielectric loss factor of the formation and the results compared to provide an indication of the amount of adsorbed water in the formation.
