Abstract The invention relates to a process for producing monokaryons of dikaryotic strains of Basidiomycetes by chemical means, for instance Pleurotus ostreatus, Kuehneromyces mutabilis, Flammulina velutipes or Lentinus edodes under gentle con- ditions so that essentially two monokaryons result per dikaryon-containing hyphal compartment. These monokaryons can be used for mating with compatible partners to give dikaryotic Basidiomycetes strains.
