ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The delignification and bleaching of lignocellulosic products is effected by treatment by means of chlorine-containing and/or oxygen- containing substances. The pulp is mixed with a pair of chlorine-containing and/or oxygen-containing substances, simultaneously or sequentially, and they, by reaction in situ, give rise to gases in the nascent state. The chlorine and/or oxygen are in the so-called "singlet" state, or in a state of higher energy. The duration of the treatment is some minutes, at a temperature below 100°, preferably of the order of 20° to 60°.
