Abstract An unwinding apparatus is disclosed for unwinding a roll of paper or the like. The apparatus has a pivotable winding drum with pivot-drives at each end thereof. The torque of each pivot-drive, in relation to the frame of the machine, is absorbed in each direction of rotation by a spring-mounted lever connected to a switch-element. Four switches are provided, arranged symmetrically in pairs, which are adapted to be actuated by the switching- element so that any relative movement of the levers is detected and compen- sated.
