APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR POPPING CORN ABSTRACT A short cycle corn popping apparatus having a transparent bowl shaped cover interfitted on a base. Mounted in the base is a pan defining a popping surface of circular configuration. Agitating mechanism including a stir rod, a spring tensioned drive assembly and motor is associated with the pan to agitate corn on the popping surface. The stir rod is held in a proper position for stirring by being biased against an annular boss formed on the popping surface and has a radius shorter than the popping surface to avoid jamming. The pan includes an inclined surface to return unpopped corn to the popping region. Tempera- ture regulated heating mechanism defining an annular heating channel heats a selected outer annular portion of the pan's popping surface to pop corn by such method. The popper is de- signed against oil leakage into its base, and has its motor shielded and insulated from heat and mounted outside of the popper's heated region. The top of the cover has a butter well associated therewith that utilizes steam generated in the popper to melt butter and butter corn as it is popped. Handle structure is formed on the popper for turning the popper over once corn has been popped and the cover is designed to serve as a serving bowl.
