Abstract of the Disclosure A floating matrix or mass for use in the melt of an electron beam vapor source to impede the flow of convection currents in the melt, improve evaporation efficiency with respect to vapor flow rate, and permit operation over a range of melt levels before replenishment of the melt is required. The floating matrix or mass consists of a material having a lower density than the melt material which is evaporated, so that the matrix or mass floats at the surface of the melt and extends a predetermined depth below the surface but substantially less than the depth of the melt.
