A B S T R A C T An apparatus and method for correcting data groups within a data stream to form a corrected data stream. Each group of the stream is applied to register and simultaneously to error detec- tion and correction apparatus. When no error is detected the data groups of the stream are transferred to a data group destination When an error is detected, the data group containing the error is replaced by a corrected data group and subsequent data groups of that stream are passed through the error detection and correction apparatus even when no correction is necessary. The process is repeated when a new stream of data groups is present.
