METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SIGNAL TRANSMISSION VIA AN OPTICAL FIBER A B S T R A C T Method and apparatus for signal transmission via an optical fiber transmission line. The method comprises (and the apparatus implements) providing a first monochro- matic beam of radiation reserved as a carrier radiation beam, providing a second monochromatic beam of radiation of pre- selected different frequency than the first monochromatic beam of radiation frequency-interlocked with the first beam of radiation to a preselected degree dependent upon the transmission service to be effected reserved as an informa- tion radiation beam, imposing an electrical signal to be transmitted upon the information radiation beam, thereby responsively modulating the information radiation beam, com- bining the carrier radiation beam and the modulated informa- tion radiation beam, transmitting the combined radiation via the optical fiber transmission line to a preselected destin- ation, and detecting the combined radiation with a square law detector to thereby obtain a subcarrier signal constitut- ing the difference in frequency between the carrier radia- tion beam and the information radiation beam upon which the electrical signal is modulated as the beat frequency of the carrier radiation beam and the modulated information radia- tion beam, and demodulating to reconstitute the original electrical signal.
