Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to novel and biologically active tetra- cyclic compounds are disclosed of the formula: Image (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition or quaternary ammonium salt thereof, wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 are each hydrogen. hydroxy, C1-C6 alkyl, C1-C6 alkoxy, C1-C6 alkylthio, halogen, or trifluromethyl; R5 is hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl; and X is oxygen or ethylene. Pharmaceutical compositions con- taining these compounds are disclosed to take advantage of the sedative, antidepressive tranquilizing, and CNS-inhibiting properties thereof. A pro- cess for the preparation of the compounds of formula (1) and their useful salts is also described.
