ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a process for making chlorine electrolytically in which a build-up of nitrogen trichloride occurs in the bottoms of cooling apparatus, a method and apparatus is provided wherein the nitrogen trichloride is dissolved in an organic solvent such as carbontetrachloride, the chlorine removed, and the solution treated by addition of a reducing agent to convert the hazardous nitrogen trichloride to ammonium chloride. The solvent is the separated and recycled to aboid environmentally undesirable waste products.
