ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is a process for digesting bauxite containing one or more of diaspore, goethite and hematite at a temperature of 180 to 300°C. with the aid of an aluminate liquor having a sodium oxide content of from 80 to 300 g/l, wherein the digestion is carried out in the presence of a hydrogarnet catalyst having a composition of A3 B2/SiO4/3-x/(OH)4/x in an amount corresponding to 5 - 20% by weight calculated on the dried weight of bauxite, where A is Ca2+ and/or Mg2+ and/or Mn2+ and/or Fe2+ and s is Al3+ and/or Fe3+ and/or Cr3+. The presence of the catalyst leads to increased yield of alumina.
