ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification describes an apparatus for adjusting circumferential and lateral register in rotary printing machines through the use of adjusting means which for circumferential register adjustment turn the plate cylinder radially by means of coupling surfaces in relation to the driving spur gear. The plate cylinder is moved axially for lateral register adjustment. The adjusting means is disposed on the operating side of the machine and the plate cylinder is driven by a straight-toothed spur gear. The first adjusting means for circumferential register adjustment is coupled to an adjusting spindle which passes axially through the plate cylinder and moves the spur gear axially in relation to the plate cylinder on a coupling having helical coupling surfaces by means of a threaded member associated with a thrust bearing. The second adjusting means for lateral register adjustment is coupled on the operating side to a threaded bush, which is rotated to axially displace the plate cylinder together with the adjusting spindle and the spur gear. In order to eliminate play, one or more compression springs are disposed between the plate cylinder and the spur gear, and the force of the compres- sion springs is transmitted through the adjusting spindle and through all the interposed members acting as a pulling element.
