Abstract: A curing agent for epoxy resins comprises an imidazole having the formula: Image wherein X is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, or phenyl and Y and Z are hydrogen or methyl, modified by addition of C1-C18 alkyl (meth)acrylate or a 1,2-monoepoxide or by carbamoylation; followed by neutralization with a lower fatty acid, a lower alkylene dicarboxylic acid, or an aromatic mono- or poly-carboxylic acid. Alternatively, the imidazole is modified by addition of a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol and neutralization is effected with a lower fatty acid or an aromatic monocarboxylic acid. The curing agent can be combined with an epoxy resin to produce a powder coating.
