ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A press useful in the production of hard board from a wet lap layer. The press has an upper and a lower platen which can be heated. The platen can be moved towards and away from each other. An upper caul plate goes against the upper platen and on top of the wet lap layer when the press is in use. A screen is positioned beneath the wet lap layers when the press is in use. A bottom caul plate does between the screen and the bottom platen. The bottom caul plate comprises a flat metal sheet having channels formed in one side. Apertures extend through the caul plate from the flat other side to the bases of the channels formed in the first side. A method of using the press is described. The press produces hard board quicker than prior art presses.
