SUBSTITUTE FUEL GAS GENERATION (D#73,169-F) ABSTRACT A carbonaceous fuel is converted, in a partial combustion zone, into a synthesis gas mainly comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide at a pressure in the range of 30-3000 psig and at a temperature in the range of 1800-3500°F. Hot synthesis gas is combined with normally liquid hydrocarbon and steam at a temperature in the range of 1800-2000°F., and at weight ratios of synthesis gas to liquid hydrocarbon of 0.1/1 to 1/1 and of steam to liquid hydrocarbon of about 0.4/1 to 2/1 for conversion of a substantial portion of said normally liquid hydrocarbon to methane. A fuel gas comprising carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane and having a gross heating value of 400-700 BTU/SCF may be produced following the disclosed process. -I-
