Abstract This invention relates to polymers containing cyclic ether units joined through 2,6-diyl linkages. The polymers have a number average molecular weight of at least 1000 and contain at least 5% by weight of segments containing at least two consecutively recurring cyclic ether units, at least one of which is a tetrahydropyran 2,6-diyl unit. The remaining cyclic ether units in the segment are selected from tetrahydropyran 2,6-diyl units and tetrahydropyran 2,5-diyl units. Preferably the polymer contains at least six cyclic ether units wherein at least 30% of the junctures between adjacent cyclic ether units have a threo configuration. The polymer is useful as an adhesion promoter. Additionally, when the cyclic ether units are joined together in the above-described threo configuration, the polymers form stable complexes with organic and inorganic cations and are useful in phase tra? fer applications and as dispersing agents for inorganic particles in nonaqueous solvents.
