ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A gas consisting essentially of carbon oxides and hydrogen is methanated at an outlet-temperature of at least 500°C. over a catalyst comprising the product of thermal decomposition and reduction of a compound containing an oxide of nickel and/or cobalt and/or iron, optionally one or more difficulty reducible divalent metal oxides, and oxide of at least one trivalent metal, hydroxyl ions, divalent anions and water. Preferably a catalyst support material of defined particle size is also present. The process is use- ful as a stage in making substitute natural gas from coal.
