ABSTRACT A gas fired barbecue grill is provided with an electric spark type automatic gas igniter mounted on the bowl or basin of the grill in such a manner that only a sparking plug extends into the bowl while electrical and mechanical components for energizing the sparking plug are suspended outside of the bowl. Specifically, a piezo- electric gas igniter has an exterior box or casing bolted to the basin containing a manually actuated hammer impar- ting a capsule containing a steel and metal sandwich to develop a voltage carried to a sparking plug on the box which projects into the basin close to the burner head of the grill for igniting the gas. The box is insulated from the basin and is kept cool by air surrounding the basin. The mounting accommodates separate or simultaneous ignition of a plurality of burners and the interior of the bowl is free from wires or the like components which might be damaged from the heat or pollution inside the basin. The same bolts mounting the exterior box also mount an interior gas collecting cage or box around the plug to expedite ignition.
