ABSTRACT A generally applicable, technically simple and economic method for recovering and reactivating cobalt-containing catalyst used in reacting olefins with carbon monoxide and alkanols is provided. The method is characterized in that the reaction mixture is treated with an oxygen-containing gas, the unreacted alkanol and olefin, the activator and the reaction products are distilled off, the resulting distillation-residue is taken up in pyridine, a non-ortho-substi- tuted alkyl pyridine or a mixture thereof, and the resulting suspension is treated with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at a temperature of 100 to 250°C and at a pressure of at least 50 bars.
