ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Tertiary monoamines and polyamines are prepared by reacting primary aromatic alcohols, aromatic aldehydes, secondary alcohols, ketones, polyether alcohols, aliphatic or aromatic polyhydric alcohols, polyaldehydes, amino alcohols and ethylene oxide adducts thereof with ammonia, a primary aliphatic amine or a secondary aliphatic amine, in the presence of a homogeneous colloidal catalyst prepared by reducing a mixture of components A and B, provided that at least one of A and B is a carboxylate or a mixture of com- ponents A, B and C, wherein A is a copper or solver carboxylate or intra- molocular complex, component B is a Group VIII, manganese or zinc carboxylate or intramolecular complex, and component C is a fatty acid or alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carboxylate thereof. The colloidal catalyst permit tertiary amine to be prepared at high yields, without reducing the activity and selectivity of the catalysts.
