Speirs ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Topical medicinal compositions for treating herpes viral infections are prepared from anthocyanin -containing fruits. The compositions comprise (i) an aqueous liquid selected from fruit juice, fermented fruit juice, liquid concentrates of said juice or fermented juice, dermatologically-acceptable water- alcohol or saline solutions, water, and mixtures thereof, and (ii) an antiviral residue obtained from the juice or fermented juice of at least one anthocyanin-containing non-citrus fruit, by steps comprising removal of aqueous liquid therefrom at temperatures below about 40°C; the amount of (ii) being chosen to form an adherent film- forming composition. Desirably the residue is formed by steps compri- sing freeze-drying and the aqueous liquid includes juice of the fruit. Auxiliary vehicles, thickeners, penetrant aids, film-forming agents, or cosmetic dyes or pigments may be added. A method of preparing such compositions is described.
