ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: This invention relates to a one-stage process for the production of malonic acid dialkyl esters having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms in each alkyl group by reaction of an halogen acetic acid alkyl ester having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst containing a cobalt compound. The reaction is carried out with an alkali or alkaline earth alcoholate with 1 to 8 carbon atoms or with a solution of alkali hydroxide in an alcohol with 1 to 8 carbon atoms at a pH-value equal to or lower than 8.5. This process advantageously is very economical as the alcohol used as solvent may be recycled and the excess of carbon monoxide may be reused without any need for expensive scrubbing of CO2.
