ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A thyristor pulse control circuit of the kind having a main thyristor and a commutation circuit including a commutating capacitor, and a by-pass contactor connected across the main thyristor, is provided with means for applying a gating signal to the main thyristor immediately before the contacts of the by-pass contactor close and also immediately before the contacts of the by-pass contactor open, to prevent arcing at the contacts. The application of the gating signal is inhibited if a comparison of the voltage across the commutating capacitor with the load current flowing immediately before the by-pass contactor closes, indicates that the load current is too great to be safely commutated by the voltage across the commutating capacitor. Thus, arcing of the contacts of the by-pass contactor is greatly reduced while, at the same time, the possibility of a failure to commutate the load current flowing through the main thyristor due to insufficient charge on the commutation capacitor is eliminated.
