ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the detoxication of nitrite-ions containing effluents by hydrogen peroxide the addition of hydrogen peroxide is automatically controllable in that during the oxidation reaction the hydrogen peroxide is added continuously or batch wise while continuously measuring the pH value and that the addition is stopped when it no longer causes a further decrease of the pH value. By controlling the addition of hydrogen peroxide with the variation of the pH value it is assured that sufficient hydrogen peroxide is added to attain a complete detoxication of the effluent but that hydrogen peroxide is not wasted.
