ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus for automatically supporting and restraining animals including birds wherein the head of the animal is held immobilized without injury. The invention is particularly adapted to support and restrain birds and in a preferred embodiment means are provided to automatically debeak birds. The apparatus comprises a turntable rotatively mounted on a frame 1 with the turntable comprising a plurality of supports spaced apart on said table. Each support comprising means for suspending a bird by its head and preferably a debeaking assembly is provided in the vicinity of said table. Drive means move said table and actuator means actuate said debeaking assembly to its operative position upon arrival of a support at a debeaking station and thereafter returns the assembly to its non-operative position. Release means release the bird from its support upon arrival at an unloading station. The invention permits the debeaking of up to 6000 birds per hour.
