ABSTRACT An oxygen sensor particularly useful for in-situ measurements in gases and molten metals contains a hollow supporting member of a non-conducting ceramic material and a closed end or tip of a composite solid electrolyte material. The composite solid electrolyte material comprises a mixture of at least two constituents, one of which is a good oxygen ion conductor and the other a non-conducting ceramic. Alumina is preferred for the hollow supporting member and the non- conducting constituent of the composite solid electrolyte material, and yttria-stabilized zirconia is preffered for the oxygen ion conducting constituent.
