ABSTRACT TITLE "VIDEO SIGNAL RECORDING AND REPRODUCING APPARATUS AND METHOD" In a VTR for use with SECAM signals, the signals are recorded in H-alignment in a plurality of parallel tracks on a record medium in a configuration such that field intervals in which the same chrominance component (i.e. B-Y or R-Y) occurs in successive tracks are aligned to reduce the effect of crosstalk. To avoid difficulties arising in stop and slow motion reproduction where the heads may scan a path which is skewed relative to the tracks, the chrominance components in every other frame are delayed by lH by a delay line prior to recording while the chrominance components in the remaining frames are delayed by 1H by a delay line . To ensure correct sequencing of a switch, associated with the second delay line a tone-burst from an oscillator is inserted during the vertical blanking period of every fourth frame.
