ELECTROLYTE SEPARATOR TENSIONING DEVICE ABSTRACT An electrolytic cell has an electrolyte separator to which is applied a controlled tension. Apparatus for applying tension to the separator includes a chamber for containing a pressurized fluid. The chamber has a movable boundary portion such as a piston or an elastomeric membrane. The boundary portion has an inward surface adapted to be disposed adjacent the fluid and an outward surface adjacent the separator. The fluid is maintained at a predetermined pressure which may be either constant or variable. The mov- able boundary portion may be in direct contact with the separa- tor or may indirectly exert tension on the separator.
