ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The preparation of novel 3-cyano penams by subjecting a 3-carbamyl penam to dehydrating conditions and employing a halogenating agent to provide said dehy- drating conditions and, if required, in order to produce a 6-alkoxy-substituted derivative, reacting the product of such dehydration with an alkanol, and, if desired, preparing an acid addition salt thereof; and intermediates useful in said preparation.
