ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention is conerned with a traction device comprising a housing, a shaft supported by the housing for rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof, a first pulley member rotatively driven by the shaft and extending laterally outwardly of the axis, a second pulley member supported for conjoint rotation with the first pulley member adjacent one side thereof, the members having an outwardly open cable receiving groove in the outer periphery thereof with surfaces thereof spaced axially with respect to the axis. The traction device also comprises means carried by at least one of the members for biasing the surfaces axially towards each other to permit a cable to be clamped therebetween, and means located between the pulley members for overcoming the bias of a portion of the means for biasing to displace a portion of at least one of the members away from the other of the members through a limited arc of conjoint rotation thereof to permit intrance and exit of a cable from said cable receiving groove. Such a traction drive can be used in construction, maintenance or the like industry to raise, lower or pull loads.
