ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A prostanoic acid derivative of the formula Image (I), which is luteolytic is produced, for example, from a ketone of the formula Image (II) , by ketalizing the ketone, reducing the ketal thus produced with a diisobutyl-aluminium hydride, and reacting the resulting hemi- acetal with a Wittig reagent of the formula PH3P=CH-(CH2)3-COOR, In the above formulae, R1 represents a hydrogen atom, a straight or branched alkyl group containing 1-10 carbon atoms, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a -CH2-U-V- group, in which U is a direct bond, a carbonyl or carbonyloxy group and V is a phenyl ring substituted by one or more phenyl groups, alkoxy groups containing 1-2 carbon atoms, or halogen atoms, preferably bromine atoms; R2 and R3 are different and represent a hydroxyl group or a hydrogen atom, or R2 and R3 together represent an oxygen atom; A represents -CH2-CH2- or a trans -CH=CH-group; B represents a -CH2-CH2- or a cis-CH=CH-group; D and E together represent a direct bond or D represents a straight chained or branched alkylene group containing 1-5 carbon atoms, and E represents an oxygen or sulphur atom; R4 represents a straight chained or branched alkyl group containing 1-10 carbon atoms, a straight chained or branched alkyl group containing 1-5 carbon atoms substituted by optionally substituted aryl, an optionally substituted aryl group or a benzodioxol-2-yl group; and Image represents Image or Image , when R2 and R3 are different and represent a hydroxyl group or a hydrogen atom, or Image represents Image or -CH=CH-, when R2 and R3 together represent an oxygen atom; Ac represents an aliphatic or aromatic acyl group; and Ph represents a phenyl group.
