ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and apparatus for use with an overall waste water treatment system using powdered activated carbon and re- generated carbon for separating and removing ash from the powdered carbon. An influent is purified by carbon with a subsequent settling step producing a clear purified product water. Underflow solids are recycled back to the influent maintaining a high carbon con- centration in the water carbon contact zone. Spent carbon is taken out of the system as a small side stream and pressurized, heated, and passed through a reactor where the carbon is re- generated and then the heavier ash is concentrated and removed. The invention is applicable to carbon used in any part of a waste water treatment system, not only in aeration operations but also in the absence of oxygen or air (anaerobic) including denitrifi- cation systems.
