PHX.8488 15-12-1976 ABSTRACT The invention relates to a memory with mag- netic domains which can be driven along at least one co- herent path. The drive along a first path section of the path is effected by a magnetic field which periodically varies in the time, for example, a rotary magnetic field which is continuously oriented in the plane of the magne- tizable plate with the domains. This first path section can be composed of T-I elements or chevrons of permalloy. This method of driving offers the advantage that the dissipation per period of the domain guide structure is very low. The drive along a second path section of the path is effected by means of a current conductor which is provided on the magnetizable plate with the domains and which is shaped, for example, as a meander, under the control of a periodic current therein. This drive offers the advantage that the achievable propagation frequency is very high. The advantages of both kinds of drive can be combined in that the first and the second path section are interconnected, it being possible to transfer the domains or their information in at least one direction; it is alternatively possible to form a logic function between domains already present in the first and the second path section. The two drives can operate at mutually different frequencies and/or inter- mittently. Thus, input and output functions can be very quickly realized. The overall dissipation remains low, because only part of the domain guide structure comprises a current conductor and this current conductor is usually activated only at intervals. Furthermore, a variety of functions can be realized by the combination of two in- dependent drive mechanisms. -28-
