ABSTRACT There is disclosed a high-responsivity avalanche- photodetector and its method of manufacture, the photodetector comprising separate layers of semiconductor material including a very high-resistivity layer whose surface presents a series of sawtoothed grooves, each groove having a short side and a long side and able to receive light radiation from an optical fibre perpendicular to its short side and parallel to its long side. The high-responsivity avalanche-photodetector is distinguished over known photodetectors by offering a high responsivity and signal-to-noise ratio for light radiations whose wavelengths are in the 1.06 to 1.2 um range.
