ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cutting tool for cutting of cast iron is formed by blending a nitride powder and an oxide powder, and heating and shaping the mixture under controlled conditions. The nitride powder consists of substantially alpha phase silicon nitride having a cation impurity content no greater than 1% and the oxide powder is at least one of yttria, magnesium oxide and zirconium oxide and is devoid of spinel. The cutting tool exhibits a failure mode by wear and not by fracture or thermal cracking when used to cut cast iron.
