ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A well is drilled down through the overburden and through the tar sands to the base thereof. A casing is placed within the borehole and extends through the overbur- den and just into the top of the tar sand deposit. A steam accumulator with a separate perforated oil sump on the base thereof is then lowered into the casing and through the tar sands to the base thereof. High pressure steam is conveyed through a conduit into the accumulator then through another conduit from the accumulator back to the surface to heat the surrounding tar sand and cause oil to separate from the sand and collect in and around the sump. An oil recovery conduit extends from the surface through the accumulator to the sump to pump oil from the sump to the surface.
