ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides an N-sulphohydroxy- alkaneaminoalkanephosphonic acid of the general formula Image in which R1 is H, CH3, C2H5, C6H5, CnH2nNH2, CnH2nOH, CnH2nCOOH (wherein n is 1 to 6) or C2H4PO3H2, R2 os H or PO3H2, R3 is CnH2n-1(OH)SO3H or CH2PO3H2, where n is 3 to 12 and R4 is H (when R3 is other than CH2PO3H2) or Cn1H2n1-1(OH)SO3H, where n1 is 3 to 12 or an alkali metal salt thereof. The acid com- pounds are good complexing agents for bi- and poly-valent metal cations and exhibit fastness against hydrolysis even at elevated temperature.
