ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An antimonate, e.g. potassium antimonate, is used as the destruc- tion catalyst in nitrogen determinations according to the Kjeldahl principle. A preferred catalyst comprises potassium antimonate together with potassium sulfate or sodium sulfate (for increasing the boiling point of the destruc- tion mixture) and at least one of a zinc salt, a copper salt or mixtures thereof, e.g. minor amounts of zinc sulfate and cupric sulfate (as co-cata- lysts). This catalyst is more acceptable than catalysts used heretofore for environmental and health reasons, and gives a sufficiently efficient destruction of the nitrogenous compounds to ensure the results of the analyses are sufficiently exact for practical purposes.
