ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is provided for making polyetherimides through an imide-amine exchange reaction catalyzed by alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and basic compounds thereof. Displacement of organic monoamine from bis(N-organophthalimide) is effected under melt conditions with organic diamine. The polyetherimide can be used as an injection moldable thermo- plastic.
